About this book

On the Hampshire coast near Keyhaven, sixteen-year-old Dick Hargrave helps the seaman Ben Rudall repair a boat while his family's future troubles him. A disputed lease threatens their farm, and Dick has already clashed with Lord Reginald Oswald. William Henry Giles Kingston places these tensions beside the daily business of fishing, boatbuilding and watching ships enter the Solent. The arrival of a damaged frigate draws the village world toward danger at sea.

This adventure for younger readers combines shipwreck fiction with questions of loyalty, fairness and naval discipline. In the middle passage, Dick must answer for leaving a ship after being forced into service, even though he has shown courage in action. Ben's willingness to bear punishment for him gives their friendship particular weight.
