About this book

On his wedding night, Florian de Puysange leaves the dancing at Storisende to visit the grave of Tiburce, the friend who once saved his life. His invitation to share the festivities receives an unsettling answer: Tiburce rises to remind him of an old promise. Set in medieval Poictesme, the opening moves from family gossip and marriage negotiations into a misty encounter that tests Florian’s confidence in lasting love.

Courtship, loyalty and the stories people tell about themselves give these historical tales their edge. In another passage, François Villon weighs Catherine’s happiness against his own needs, then claims that the hardships of Paris have made his poetry possible. The narrator’s sly comments and the characters’ grand declarations keep affection close to vanity and self-interest. Readers can follow both the strange events and the uncomfortable gap between loving someone and understanding them.
