About this book
The Lion's Share by Octave Thanet has chapters headed, among others, Blind Clues and The Voice in the Telephone. Mrs. Melville says that a person must have been seen had he come out of the room, and the colonel admits he was directly in front of the doors all the time. Mrs. Wigglesworth gives a grateful nod and says there was a stain, as large as the palm of her hand, a little pool of what looks like blood.
The colonel kneels, examines the stains, and says very quietly that she is right, it is blood. The colonel says he was put out a good deal at first by the women getting mixed up in it, but that Miss Smith undoubtedly saved Mr. Keatcham’s life. Aunt Rebecca is quoted as having said once, “It is the improbable that always happens, and the impossible most of the time.”
