About this book

Annie Fellows Johnston's 1906 book in her Little Colonel series opens on a May afternoon at Warwick Hall, a girls' school above a Kentucky river. Betty Lewis, editor of the school's souvenir volume, is writing verses in the garden when a special-delivery letter brings word of a surprise for Lloyd Sherman's birthday.

Lloyd, the Little Colonel of the earlier books, is now old enough to take an interest in other people's romances. The story centres on a Southern wedding and the house-party that gathers for it, with chapters on the arrival of the bridal party, a diary Betty keeps, and young Mary Ware, who worries about how she looks beside the older girls.

It is a gentle girls' school and family story of friendship, weddings and country manners in early twentieth-century Kentucky, told in a warm, chatty voice.
