About this book
A loom, a clock, a spinning wheel and a water mill hold the memories that open Cotton Noe's poetry collection. First published in 1912, the volume arranges its poems in sections named for thread and cloth, including A Skein of Silver and Linen and Lace. Margaret at her loom and Ruth at her wheel give ordinary household work a musical rhythm, while recollections of childhood connect familiar objects with love, change and loss.
The shorter poems turn to cow bells in a valley, hollyhocks beside humble homes, the claims of books and the private music of unwritten songs. Noe also addresses Helen of Troy and pays tribute to Robert Burns, moving between rural scenes and literary subjects. Rhyme, repeated lines and direct feeling make these verses suited to readers interested in how domestic life, landscape and memory become the material of poetry.
