About this book
The Lost and Hostile Gospels, by the Rev. S. Baring-Gould, M.A., is an essay on the Toledoth Jeschu, and the Petrine and Pauline Gospels of the First Three Centuries of Which Fragments Remain. The contents are divided into Part I, The Jewish Anti-Gospels, Part II, The Lost Petrine Gospels, and Part III, The Lost Pauline Gospels.
The text says that the Jews, at the time of the first spread of Christianity, were dispersed over the whole world, and that in Greece and Asia Minor they occupied a quarter, and exercised influence, in every town. The book holds it probable that the original Hebrew Gospel had some such passage as the one urging approved money-changers to choose that which is good metal and reject that which is bad. The book quotes St. Epiphanius saying that in the Ebionite Gospel, by a criminal fraud, a protestation has been placed in the mouth of the Lord.
