About this book

W. E. Soothill, Professor of Chinese at the University of Oxford, is named on the title page, dated 1930, of The Lotus of the Wonderful Law, or the Lotus Gospel, with the Sanskrit title Saddharma Pundarika Sutra and the Chinese Miao-fa lien hua ching. A caption at the front shows the return of Chinese envoys sent to India about A.D. 63, who brought their emperor an image of the Buddha and copies of the scriptures.

The text is divided into numbered sections. One has the Buddha foretell that Maha-Kasyapa will be the Buddha Radiance. Another gives a parable in verse of a leader who makes an illusory city for weary travellers to rest in, then tells them to press on to the Place of Jewels. A further passage speaks of a shrine holding the Ancient Buddha, Many Precious Things, and of a rich elder who recognises his son.
