About this book
The book is a translation of the Dao De Jing, and the opening note says it tries to include an exact translation of every Chinese symbol in the original text, with as few added words and paraphrasing as possible. The opening note says the sentences hopefully provide a more literal translation, but are bare and minimalist, sometimes awkward. The text says the most recent versions of the DDJ are separated into 81 chapters, and two major parts.
The text says the first part, consisting of chapters 1-37, primarily discusses Dao, while chapters 38-81 primarily discuss De. The text says the Guodian version was discovered in 1993 and written around 300 BCE or slightly earlier. A line of the translation reads: Weakness conquers strength. Softness conquers hardness.
