About this book
Rabindranath Tagore translated these pieces from Bengali into English himself, and this edition is dated 1916. The text is divided into short numbered sections in Roman numerals, many of them in the form of verse addressed to a “you”.
The first section begins, “Bid me and I shall gather my fruits to bring them in full baskets into your courtyard.” Section XIII is about movement, with the line “To move is to meet you every moment, Fellow-traveller!” Section XIV says, “My portion of the best in this world will come from your hands,” and XV begins, “Your speech is simple, my Master.” Among the verse sits a short prose story of Raghunath, who brings his teacher a pair of gold bangles. One slips from the teacher's hand into the water, Raghunath jumps in after it, and the teacher then throws in the second bangle, saying, “It is there.”
