About this book
The Loyalist is by James Francis Barrett, dedicated to the author's sister and divided into three parts. Its foreword says historical facts form the background of the story: the hero and heroine are fictitious, while General Arnold, the Shippen family and other military and civic figures are described for the most part accurately.
In one scene Peggy and Marjorie talk about a farewell party, the great Mischienza, arranged in honor of General Howe, who is to leave the next week; they talk of General Clinton succeeding him and of whether the city will be evacuated. In another, a man tells a woman that persistent rumors about him are groundless. A passage follows a character named Stephen as he leaves two others at an inn and walks toward Second Street and the Germantown road, where he comes to the Allison home.
