About this book

Ten-year-old Philip Haldane is used to sharing his whole world with Helen, the older half-sister who has raised him. Their games include an imaginary island where they rule together and admit nobody else. When Helen announces that she will marry an old friend, Philip struggles with the prospect of sharing her affection. The promised ponies and a new playmate, Lucy, do little to soften his first response. This children's story begins with the hurt and confusion behind a boy's angry words.

Later, Philip discovers that the cities he has built have lives of their own. A carpenter, Mr. Perrin, explains a world inhabited by dolls, tin soldiers and animals from Noah's ark. Philip also faces the prospect of confronting a lively green dragon. The movement from household worries to strange adventures gives readers both a child's view of family change and a playful account of imagination taking physical shape.
