About this book
Calmness, for William George Jordan, begins with the way a person meets the small irritations of an ordinary day. These essays on character and conduct connect composure with purpose, self-reliance and control of one's reactions. The opening uses images of a ship holding its course and quiet water below a storm to explain the strength he finds in a steady mind. Another essay turns to American haste, questioning the cost of ambition to health, family life and mutual consideration.
Published in 1898, the collection also asks how failure can produce useful results. An account of scattered raft logs becoming evidence about ocean currents gives that argument a concrete example. Jordan's direct advice and moral comparisons offer readers a view of personal improvement rooted in daily habits, responsibility and the effort to begin again after disappointment.
