About this book

For Rabindranath Tagore, the connection between a person and the wider world begins with the experience of unity. These essays move from that philosophical starting point into art, religion and social life. In the opening discussion, even a water vessel becomes a way of distinguishing practical usefulness from beauty. Memories of trees beside a childhood garden and references to Wordsworth bring the argument close to everyday perception and imaginative experience.

The contents extend the discussion to freedom, nations, the home and an Eastern university. In the middle excerpt, Tagore presents cultural exchange between East and West as a shared contribution to civilisation, while challenging contempt and the exploitation of other peoples. He also separates his criticism of collective power from his admiration for individual acts of service. Published in 1922, the collection offers readers an account of how creative expression, spiritual kinship and human fellowship can inform public life.
