About this book

The Man from the Bitter Roots is by Caroline Lockhart, who is also named as the author of The Fighting Shepherdess and The Lady Doc. The contents list chapter titles such as, among others, Before He Grew Up, The Game Butchers and Self-Defence. The book is dedicated to Mrs. Louis Howe, with all gratitude and affection.

Bruce wondered often at his own self-control, and carried scars of knife and bullet that bore mute testimony that he had not outgrown his quick and violent temper. Bruce was working on a bar of sand and gravel half a mile in width and a mile and a half or so in length, where he had followed a pay streak into the bank, timbering the tunnel as he went. Helen turns her back to the wind and draws out a note for a second reading, a cordial dinner invitation whose greeting, "My dear Miss Dunbar," she observes critically. Mr. Hinds, the cowed owner of the Hinds House, murmurs yes ma'am to a complaint that the bacon's froze and there ain't a knife in the kitchen that will cut.

About the author

Caroline Lockhart

Caroline Lockhart (1871–1962) started as a newspaper reporter in Boston and Philadelphia, working the stunt-girl beat Nellie Bly had made famous: she dove into Boston Harbor in a diver's suit and jumped from a fourth-story window to test a fire net, all for copy. She moved to Cody, Wyoming, in 1904 and stayed for the rest of her life.
