About this book
Hadleyburg has guarded its reputation for honesty for three generations, even keeping temptation away from its children. An offended stranger decides to test that confidence by leaving a sack said to contain a fortune at the home of an elderly bank cashier. The attached instructions promise the money to a townsman who can repeat a particular remark, giving public virtue a sudden personal price.
Mark Twain's collection extends beyond this opening tale into stories, sketches, personal recollections and social commentary. Its contents range from lying and literary beginnings to acting, travel and military experience. The middle excerpt examines the unfair treatment of Jewish people through an argument about citizenship, family responsibility and charitable support. Published in 1900, the volume brings together comic situations and direct discussion of public beliefs. Readers can compare the town's proud self-image with Twain's wider interest in how people justify their conduct.
