About this book
Lal Britten earns his living behind the wheel and tells his stories with a driver's pride, sharp opinions and an eye for unusual passengers. Max Pemberton's collection follows this chauffeur through encounters that mix mystery with comedy. In the opening tale, actress Fauny Dartel lends a stranger the use of her car. His changing instructions take Britten around London and finally to a house in Portman Square, where a late gathering is being assembled at remarkable speed.
Another excerpt moves into the world of early motor racing, with unreliable engines, wet roads and competitors meeting in France. Britten describes his troublesome racing car and introduces Ferdinand, a driver he admires. The appeal lies as much in the narrator's lively talk as in the curious situations: readers get mechanical mishaps, observations of wealthy society and a working driver's view of people who can afford expensive cars.
