About this book
Ignat passes a night and the following morning drinking vodka, dozing and crossing himself in silence before the ikons. A midwife congratulates Ignat Matveyich on a son, and Ignat responds by kneeling, clasping his hands and thanking God in a trembling voice. Foma watches sunbeams quivering over a placid expanse of water and imagines the fragments of conversation he catches as dark butterflies fluttering in the air.
Sasha rests her head on Foma's shoulder and whispers something that leaves him blushing and confused. A conversation raises the possibility of throwing away wealth and entering a monastery, while Foma replies that he will see.
