The Spy is subtitled The Story of a Superfluous Man. The text says that when Yevsey Klimkov was four years old his father died, shot by the forester, and that when he was seven years old his mother died. Uncle Piotr, a blacksmith, puts his hand on the boy's head and asks what they are going to do now.
A scene with a fire has the women form a chain from the fire to the river, with buckets of water rapidly passed from hand to hand. A conversation has Yevsey hear the words “I consider you a good man. I trust you.” and answer that one mustn't trust. The text shows Yevsey returning to see the master's body completely covered with a blanket, with Rayisa remaining half dressed with bare shoulders.
