About this book
Through Russia has a contents list naming The Birth of a Man, The Icebreaker, Gubin and Nilushka, among others. A piece headed The Birth of a Man sets its scene in the year '92, the year of leanness, at a spot between Sukhum and Otchenchiri on the river Kodor. The season is autumn, with leaves of wild laurel glistening and gyrating on the white foam of the Kodor.
A woman from Orlov softly comments that the folk of these parts are ugly to look at. The woman hands over a moist and heavy bundle and begs, out of pity for her son, that it be buried as deeply as possible. As a steamer leaves Sundir, a man springs overboard in the sight of everybody. The sun's huge, rosy-red disk impinges upon the blue shadows of the horizon, bathes the ears of grain in radiance and makes the cornflowers seem the darker by comparison.
