About this book
The book is THE MAN WITH THE BROKEN EAR, translated from the French of Edmond About. In the eyes of Leon Renault, Clementine was the most beautiful creature in the world. Leon, who was a good mathematician, proposed to himself the following problem, which concerns one young girl, fifteen and a half years old, with an income of 8,000 francs.
A character named Fougas is quoted as saying Embrace me, and You yield; I pardon. The text remarks on an old mummy dictating laws, breaking off marriages, and imposing his desires on the whole house. A grandfather is described as the one for whom someone had paid five-hundred francs, whose ear had been broken, and for whom a burial-place in the Fontainebleau cemetery had been bought.
