About this book

Rob turns his family's house into an electrical experiment, filling it with bells, alarms and telephones that delight his father and exasperate his mother. In his attic workshop, a muddled circuit produces a dazzling visitor who calls himself the Demon of Electricity. L. Frank Baum's 1901 tale for young readers builds its fantasy around the hope that inventions once thought impossible might eventually become ordinary tools.

The story carries this curiosity into adventure and questions of judgment. In the London passage, Rob shows a king spectacles that reveal a person's character, then uses a device that displays recent events to test a minister's loyalty. Such instruments give the boy extraordinary influence, while his casual manner adds humor to his encounters with authority. Readers interested in early visions of technology will find a children's fantasy that links scientific confidence with the responsibilities of using unusual powers.
