About this book

An evening radio concert is enough to bring Bob Layton and his friends together in Clintonia, where wireless sets have become their shared obsession. Published in 1922, Allen Chapman's boys' adventure mixes jokes and school life with amazement at a technology that can carry a speech hundreds of miles faster than sound crosses a room. Their enthusiasm soon has a more serious use: strange broadcasts in a familiar, stuttering voice suggest that someone is concealing plans in code.

The boys compare what they have heard with radio expert Frank Brandon, who suspects Dan Cassey and possible accomplices. Alongside the mystery come conversations about equipment, storage batteries and the practical possibilities of wireless communication. Readers interested in early radio will find a period story in which tinkering with a set, recognizing a voice and paying close attention can turn a hobby into an investigation.
