About this book
The Mayor of New York, by L. P. Gratacap, presents itself as a romance of days to come, with Grand Street crowded in the year Two Thousand. The city scene describes the East Side as still an enigma of the twenty-first century, although its congestion has met an approximate solution.
Jessie asks her father to transform a room with clean windows, curtains, fresh paper, lamps, a new ceiling, a scrubbed floor and old furniture from the attic. The reply to Jessie rejects making the room tidy, on the grounds that the men think better without having to consider their surroundings. The text describes Longtinsky as feeling a tenderness when Jessie is near him that would have saved him from many unruly and wicked impulses.
