About this book

Atlantis is a novel by Gerhart Hauptmann, translated by Adele and Thomas Seltzer. The German fast mail steamer Roland, one of the older vessels of the North German Steamship Company, plying between Bremen and New York, left Bremen on the twenty-third of January, 1892. Frederick says to himself that after all there was still a German nation left, and is astonished and delighted to behold so many confidence-inspiring masculine figures among the officers and some of the ship's crew.

A passage about the strain says it showed in Mrs. Liebling as periodic attacks of great excitement and fear accompanied by violent palpitation, and in Ingigerd Hahlström as healthy sleepiness. The immigrant in her delirium wants to jump from bed, and Captain Butor appoints one of the well sailors from the Roland and a sailor from the Hamburt to relieve each other in keeping constant watch over her.
