About this book
Hashknife rides into a mystery in Stormy River County and finds himself given the name that supplies the book's title. The scene places the action in Pineville at an early morning hour when there is little activity in town. The Stormy River Saloon still has its lamps burning as tired cattlemen deal poker hands and occasionally drink, ignoring the fact that it is Sunday morning.
The attorney considers that Blanco may be guilty but says that the case cannot yet be proved. The sheriff feels relief because he does not want the task of arresting Tex Blanco, owner of the B Arrow outfit. Marion sends two larger boys home with notes to their parents after a fight in the yard and does not feel physically able to whip them.
