The Light of the Western Stars by Zane Grey places Madeline at a ranch where Stillwell reports that Stewart has arrived and taken quarters with Nels. Madeline sees boxes full of rifles and ammunition after their lids and inner packing have been removed. Stewart says he found the boxes hidden in an unused room while taking charge of the ranch and calls their contents contraband goods.
Ambrose warns that the guerrillas will regain their nerve and follow the trail or try to cut the party off with an ambush. Madeline is described as a conscientious student of ranching and an apt pupil of Stillwell, under whose guidance she has ridden the ranges.
