About this book

Henry Sidgwick's "The Methods of Ethics" carries a Greek line from Plato on its title page. The detailed table of contents shows a chapter on justice, including the idea that desert should be requited, and how good desert and ill desert might be measured. Another chapter, "Laws and Promises", asks what kind of government is legitimately obeyed and where its authority stops.

The contents also look at promises: how binding one is when it was obtained by force or fraud, when circumstances have changed since it was made, or when it was made to the dead or absent. In a passage on payment for services, Sidgwick weighs whether the just price is simply the usual one, and notes that market prices rise and fall through free competition between producers and traders. The endnotes discuss Aristotle's use of the Greek word for happiness.
