About this book

Jabez Hogg's guide to the microscope is the fifteenth edition, dated 1898, and its title page calls it reconstructed, rewritten, revised and enlarged throughout. It describes itself as a familiar introduction to the use of the instrument and the study of microscopical science, with upwards of nine hundred engraved and coloured illustrations by Tuffen West and other artists.

One passage looks back on the history of the instrument, naming Trembley, Ellis, Baker, Adams and others, and says that no great progress was made in its construction until achromatic lenses were applied. In 1823 a desire for improved forms became manifest in France, Munich, Modena and London. Another passage explains the selenite stage used with polarised light, built by Mr. Darker, and how films produce colours. A third describes bryozoa, including bird's-head corallines, the thread-like vibracula and the egg receptacles called ovicells, with a plate number cited for the statoblast.
