About this book
The Model of a Judge opens by asking whether a former outlaw should become a judge, even if he need only pass sentence on a layer cake. Ronar is described as reformed, if that was the right word, though he could see that they didn't trust him, with uneasiness in their awkward hurried motions and fear in their eyes.
Mrs. Claymore, of the Presiding Committee, asks Mrs. Silver whether she has entered the contest. Mrs. Silver replies that she does not expect to win against so many fine women who are taking part, but entered to keep things interesting. Mrs. Claymore says there had been such trouble with the committee, with such charges of favoritism, and that the judge is sitting up there alone on the platform. Mrs. Silver cries "he isn't human", and is told that he is supposed to be, now.
