The Montessori Elementary Material is by Maria Montessori. The title page says the book is translated from the Italian by Arthur Livingston and has forty-four illustrations from photographs and numerous diagrams. The text says that cards for the parts of speech are oblongs of different colors: black for the noun, tan for the article, brown for the adjective, red for the verb, pink for the adverb, violet for the preposition, yellow for the conjunction and blue for the interjection.
A passage on number work says that when we come to add and subtract numbers of several figures and to write the results in column, the facility resulting from this preparation is something astonishing. The text says that the children first compose the sentences with their cards and then copy them in their writing books.
