About this book
The Moon Is Green is by Fritz Leiber, and its tagline says that anybody who wanted to escape death could, by paying a very simple price, denial of life. A woman named Effie is asked by her husband's voice what the devil she is up to, and answers that she is just looking at the Moon, which is green. A face moves back from the window's glow into the outside dark, slowly, reluctantly, and still faunlike, pleading, cajoling, tempting, and incredibly beautiful.
A woman faces an angry little man who says that the shutters are not to be touched, not for five more years at least. A man tells a woman to count herself with a Geiger counter, and the ticking spurts, clicking faster and faster, when she comes to her waist. A man tells Effie that soon enough he will be scared to death for both of them, asks if she has food, and she sets cold meat and some precious canned bread before him. Hank cries out Effie, but she says she cannot be cooped up there any longer and is going to the garden.
