On a remote island in the Pacific a shining and beautiful entity known as the Dweller rises from a moonlit pool and carries people away, and an expedition descends through ancient ruins into a hidden world beneath the earth. There the travellers find a lost civilisation, strange forgotten science, and a struggle between forces of light and shadow for the fate of that buried realm and perhaps the surface world as well. Merritt’s lush, dreamlike imagination made him one of the most admired pulp writers of his time and a strong influence on the fantasy authors who followed.
