About this book

In third-century Patara, helping the sick and poor makes Pathema a conspicuous figure in a city increasingly hostile to Christians. The daughter of a prosperous merchant, she visits those in need with Miriam, her attendant. Meanwhile, two men watch her movements, seeking a pretext for arrest and the reward it could bring. Their calculation gives ordinary streets and charitable visits an atmosphere of danger.

Grant Balfour frames this historical religious story around active faith, moral courage and the pressure of public opinion. A bedside conversation with the injured boy Crito links classical reading with questions of conviction and reputation. Later scenes move to an arena, where spectators confront the prospect of a defenseless woman facing a lion. Through anxious conversations as well as moments of suspense, the narrative asks what compassion requires when helping another person carries a serious risk. It suits readers interested in early Christian fiction and stories of conscience under persecution.
