About this book

Gordon Home is the author of The Motor Routes of England, Western Section. The text calls the north transept the reputed site of St. Alban's martyrdom. A year, 793, is given for Offa the Great, King of Mercia, who founded the monastery, and either repaired and enlarged the Romano-British church or built a new one.

Clifford Castle stands upon a bold eminence by the side of the river, the text says, and was the birthplace of Jane de Clifford, the Fair Rosamond of Henry II., and the former residence of the Lords de Clifford. The village of Whitney is described as surrounded by a rich belt of pasture-land interspersed with clumps of trees, with exceedingly beautiful scenery to be found upon the river-banks. An index lists, among others, Dunsmore Heath, Dunstable and Dunstable Downs.
