About this book
The Native Races of British North America is by Wilfrid D. Hambly. A chapter headed The Social Life of the Eskimo says the Eskimo housewife rises long before daybreak and at once supplies the lamp with a new wick and more blubber. The text says there is no money among the Eskimo, trade is by barter, and when gambling the stakes are articles of clothing, weapons, and food.
The text says winter, during which all bays and inlets are frozen, is a good time for visiting friends, because a sledge journey over the ice is a very easy means of travelling many miles. The text says that to the Eskimo, Kalopaling is a dreadful monster of human form, covered with feathers of the eider duck. A passage says about twenty-five years ago a great chief of Vancouver Island gave a potlatch to 2500 persons from different tribes. Another passage says slaves, usually people taken in war, were at one time common.
