About this book

A Spirit in Prison is credited to Robert Hichens, and its contents run on to CHAPTER XLI CHAPTER XLII EPILOGUE. Chapter I begins with a boy's voice singing somewhere, not far off on the still sea that held the tiny islet in a warm embrace. Hermione and Artois return to Hermione's room to have coffee, on a day that is absolutely windless, with the sky nearly white and the sea a pale gray.

A diver for frutti di mare is described as a boy about seventeen or eighteen, black hair, Arab eyes, bronze skin, a smile difficult to refuse. In one scene a man cannot sit still in a boat and says there is enough breeze to sail and to run up the sail. One scene has Artois thinking that he must tell her, make her see the exact truth of the years and win her back to reason.

Robert Hichens

Robert Smythe Hichens (1864–1950) was an English novelist, journalist, and music critic who first drew notice as a satirist of the 1890s. His anonymously published novel "The Green Carnation" (1894) lampooned Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas so pointedly that it was withdrawn during Wilde's trial.
