About this book
Richard Davey tells the story of Lady Jane Grey, and the author's note says he wants to interest the reader in her tragic story from the personal rather than the political point of view. The book is edited and introduced by Martin Hume, was first published in 1909, and carries twelve illustrations.
The sampled pages follow the politics around her: the Duke of Norfolk and the Howard family, the Catholic party at court, and the first weeks of Queen Mary's reign, when commissioners write to the Council at Westminster in a letter dated 29th July. Another passage describes a ponderous vehicle with leather curtains, mattresses and cushions, cloaks and vizors for the ladies, and roads whose first genuine repair statute dates only from 1668.
