About this book
The title page reads "The Officer's Manual. Napoleon's Maxims of War", dated Richmond, Virginia, 1862. The contents list a recommendation, a preface and a run of numbered maxims.
In the pages sampled, one passage advises that if one flank of an army rests on a river or an impassable ravine, the cavalry can be placed on the other wing, and that the order of march should serve the order of battle. Another gives the example of Prince Eugene and the Duke de Vendome on the Adda: Eugene's bridge, Vendome's army drawn up in a bow with the river as its cord, and Eugene's decision to withdraw the bridge and break up his camp by night. A biographical note on Marshal Berthier mentions sixteen campaigns over nineteen years.
