About this book
Russ Healy has kept an aging Jenny flying through a string of odd jobs, repairs and stunt work. To the other men in Brooks' Flying Circus, the battered machine is the Old Lady; to Russ, she is worth defending even when newer aircraft make her seem a burden. When Bob Brooks decides the struggling outfit must reduce its fleet, Russ's attachment to his plane puts his place among the pilots at risk.
Raoul Whitfield's short aviation story follows that quarrel from a field near Los Angeles to a movie location in the hills. A director wants dangerous flying scenes for a war picture, and Russ sees a chance to prove what his old machine can do. A fellow flyer tells the story in brisk, informal language, mixing technical details with dry humor. The appeal lies in the practical world of engines, flying wires and hurried landings, and in the uneasy balance between professional skill, wounded pride and loyalty among working pilots.
