About this book
The Orbis Pictus of Johann Amos Comenius, called World Illustrated in one quotation, is presented here with quotations from histories of education, including Payne, Gill, Browning, Compayre and Painter. One calls it the first illustrated school-book and an early form of the object lesson, and another adds that Comenius wrote fifteen works during four years at Patak.
The main text sets English and Latin side by side, with a number after each named object. A sampled section, numbered LXXIII, is headed The Stove with the Bed-room and names the arched roof, the windows, the oven, benches, stools, tables and cushions. Another line speaks of a floor under the roof, a well and stable in the yard and a cellar under the house. An index lists Latin headings such as Geometria, Horologia and Instrumenta Musica.
