About this book
Professor Gilroy begins his diary with spring outside the laboratory window and a firm preference for measurable facts. His colleague Wilson approaches the mind with an enthusiasm that Gilroy finds difficult to share. At a university gathering, Wilson introduces him to Miss Penclosa, whose claimed powers put that confidence under pressure. Arthur Conan Doyle's 1894 story brings mesmerism into the social world of professors, evening visits and an engagement to Agatha Marden.
The dated entries make Gilroy's changing state of mind the centre of the narrative. In the middle excerpt, he locks himself in his bedroom and drops the key into the garden as a precaution against an influence he fears. Agatha notices his exhaustion, while he struggles to judge whether his precautions have helped. For readers drawn to psychological suspense and supernatural fiction, the interest lies in watching a scientific observer try to explain experiences that unsettle his trust in his own judgement.
