About this book
The Patrician, by John Galsworthy, is divided in its contents into Part I and Part II, each numbered by chapters. Part I, Chapter I, describes light, entering the vast room, a room so high that its carved ceiling refused itself to exact scrutiny, travelling with the wistful, cold curiosity of the dawn over a fantastic storehouse of Time.
Lord Valleys is described as speaking of war as one who, since he arrived at years of discretion, had lived within the circle of those who direct the destinies of States, and as having a nature whose prime strength was its practicality and lack of imagination. Lady Casterley rises and says: It has none. When war comes, the feeling will be all right. It always is. Part II, Chapter I, describes little Ann Shropton at three o'clock in the afternoon of the nineteenth of July beginning to climb the main staircase of Valleys House, London.
