About this book
The Patriotic Poems of Walt Whitman opens with a short poem, America, that addresses the country as a seated Mother. The front matter names Richard Maurice Bucke, Thomas B. Harned and Horace L. Traubel as Whitman's literary executors, and a transcriber's note says archaic spelling has been kept.
One poem takes the reader into a crowded hospital lit by torches, where surgeons work, a young soldier is among the injured, and orders to fall in are heard outside. Another, Come Up from the Fields Father, begins with a letter arriving from a son named Pete and describes an Ohio autumn of ripe apples and grapes. Passages in longer lines picture a great city and state that the American compact is with individuals.
