About this book
Memories of Lincoln is a book by Walt Whitman, with a contents list naming a foreword, When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd, O Captain! My Captain!, Hush'd Be the Camps Today, This Dust Was Once the Man and a group headed Lyrics of the War. A writer recalls that Whitman said of Lincoln that Lincoln is particularly his man, and that he is Lincoln's man. The text says Whitman was literary, but not first of all literary: first of all he was human.
One piece speaks of lilac and star and bird twined with the chant of my soul, and of the sweetest, wisest soul of all my days and lands. The piece headed O Captain! My Captain! says our fearful trip is done, the ship has weather'd every rack, and the prize we sought is won. A piece headed Camps of Green speaks of old comrades of the wars who, footsore and weary, halt for the night after a long march.
