About this book

The Pearl of Orr's Island is a story of the coast of Maine by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The chapter list begins with Naomi, Mara, The Baptism and the Burial, Aunt Roxy and Aunt Ruey and The Kittridges. The funeral was over and the tread of many feet had been to the lonely graveyard, and the solemn black clock stood swaying with its eternal tick-tock in the kitchen of the brown house on Orr's Island.

Mara, horrified and shocked, does not lose her alert presence of mind, and feels that these men were playing upon Moses, flattering and cajoling him and leading him to drink. The man called Atkinson relates story after story of wild adventure and tells of piratical adventures in the West Indies. Moses sits down and looks around on the old familiar scene, where there was the great fireplace in which, in their childish days, they had sat together winter nights.
