About this book
We and Our Neighbors: Or, The Records of an Unfashionable Street is a novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe, a sequel to My Wife and I. The contents list chapters titled The Other Side of the Street, How We Begin Life, The Family Dictator at Work and Aunt Maria Rouses a Tempest in a Teapot.
A speaker says that a parlor is a perfect bower, a drab dove's nest wreathed round with vines and all a-bloom with geraniums, and that her own is coming on to look just like it. A speaker asks Mr. Quackenboss whether he has any nice butter, and he answers Yes in a tone of great reserve. The text says that Mary had an elder brother, Mike McArtney, who had established himself in a grocery business a little out of the city and felt himself to stand in position of head of the family. A speaker writes that in their group of families Maggie will always find friends, and that Angie wants her to come and live with them when they begin housekeeping.
