About this book
Grief gathers around a lost pearl in a garden, then opens into a dream of crystal cliffs, shining woods and brightly colored birds. Sophie Jewett's 1908 version of The Pearl brings a Middle English poem into modern language while preserving its original metre. The speaker mourns his precious loss, prays among summer flowers and falls asleep, entering a landscape where sensory detail and religious meaning meet.
The poem joins personal lament to a conversation about divine generosity. In the middle excerpt, a vineyard owner's equal payments to workers become the basis for a debate about justice, merit and grace. Jewett's preface explains her efforts to retain the demanding rhyme pattern and some alliteration, while acknowledging difficult readings in the earlier language. This version offers readers interested in medieval poetry a way to follow both the speaker's sorrow and the Christian ideas expressed through the dream.
