About this book
Zophiel carries his harp through earthly landscapes, seeking reminders of the heaven he has lost. Maria Gowen Brooks portrays this fallen angel through grief, memory and a restless response to beauty. Near Raguel's place of secret worship, he reflects on his former happiness before singing about ambition. His song weighs the achievements that ambition makes possible against the discontent it brings, giving a supernatural figure an emotional conflict that readers can readily recognise.
Published in 1825, the narrative poem draws on a story from Jewish annals and on beliefs about spirits. Its opening invocation presents Poetry as a source of comfort amid suffering. Brooks's preface also explains her own attachment to literary work and argues for women's freedom to exercise their minds through writing. The formal stanzas, religious imagery and reflections on artistic effort offer readers a view of how poetry connects private feeling with questions about human purpose.
