About this book
The book is presented as an authorised translation with an introduction by Frederic Harrison. The discussion of scientific knowledge calls abstraction without positive character fictitious or metaphysical. Positive knowledge, the discussion says, lacks generality and fails to become rational when it is not abstract. The account says that, according to Comte, Descartes’ discovery has been understood and fully applied only since the invention of the calculus.
The discussion of positive science describes the order found in nature as far from absolute, arising from the combined activity of the mind and things. The account says the contributions of mind and things cannot be separated, while giving the mind a large role.
