About this book
The Philosophy of Evolution, together with a preliminary essay on the metaphysical basis of science, is by Stephen H. Carpenter. The title page says the two papers were read before the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters at the annual meetings of February, 1873 and February, 1874. Under the heading The Metaphysical Basis of Science, the text states that all knowledge is essentially one and that physics, when stripped of that which is merely contingent, becomes metaphysics.
A passage says that matter, according to the present constitution of things, is the condition of intellectual communication. Another passage says the thinker must embody his thoughts in language before he can communicate them to another. The text says that intermediate terms are not capable of independent interpretation and find their full explanation only in the extremes of the series, God and Man.
